Between the end of the outdoor season and the first festival announcements of spring, the live business moves indoors and starts shopping. The showcase festivals of autumn and winter are where next summer's small-print names are chosen: short sets in clubs, watched by festival bookers, agents and export offices, with a conference attached by day.
Two fixed points of that run are now dated. BIME takes place in Bilbao from 27 to 30 October 2026, according to its website. ESNS, the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival and conference, takes place in Groningen from 13 to 16 January 2027, according to its own. What is new this season is how deliberately the two ends are being joined, and how much of the programme is being built for professionals first.
What the circuit is for
The best evidence comes from ESNS itself. Its European Talent Exchange programme tracks what happens to acts after they play Groningen. For summer 2026 it reported 256 confirmed shows for 115 artists from 32 countries at 73 partner festivals in 28 countries. The most booked act, the Irish band Madra Salach, had 16 festival slots. Joshua Idehen had 13, and Dove Ellis and Florence Road, both Irish, had 10 each.
That is the product: a January club set converted into a July itinerary. Everything else in the run, from the panels to the receptions, is organised around making that conversion more likely.
Bilbao, 27 to 30 October
BIME describes this as its 14th edition in Bilbao. The professional congress, BIME Pro, runs on 27, 28 and 29 October at Euskalduna Bilbao, according to a July press release. BIME Live, the showcase festival, spreads over four days in the city's venues, with more than 65 concerts and free admission, according to the edition page.
Its identity is transatlantic. BIME has also run in Bogotá since 2022, and says its purpose is to open routes between Latin America and Europe. The Live bill reflects that, with acts listed from Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Ecuador and Mexico alongside Spain, Portugal, France and the Netherlands. Announced speakers include Jorge Drexler, Activision's head of music Brandon Young, and Isaac Lee of HYBE Latin America.
The detail that matters for the circuit is in BIME's first programme announcement. The 2026 edition, it says, reinforces its European dimension through an alliance with ESNS and the European Talent Exchange Programme, to be expressed in exchange actions between the two professional communities. BIME has also launched, for the first time, its own call aimed at European artists. A new strand called Orillas is dedicated to venues, festivals and programmers working far from the big urban centres.
Groningen, 13 to 16 January
ESNS has more to live up to. Its 2026 edition sold out, with almost 300 acts from 39 countries, an audience of about 40,000 and over 4,000 professionals at the conference, by the organiser's count.
For 2027 the focus country is Ireland, for the second time, in partnership with First Music Contact and the broadcaster RTÉ 2FM. ESNS's head of music, Oskar Strajn, explained the choice with the booking data: "Over the past years we have all seen the Irish scene growing exponentially, and right now it's fully blossoming." On 8 October the festival announced eighteen more Irish acts, taking the list published so far to 21.
The first wave for Eurosonic, which runs from 13 to 15 January, named 42 artists selected with 28 public radio stations of the European Broadcasting Union. ESNS said almost 6,000 artists applied, which it called a record. Noorderslag, the Dutch night, closes the event at De Oosterpoort on Saturday 16 January.
The structural change is on the first day. A new Wednesday programme opens with Meet the Agencies, an invitation-only session for European booking agencies and festivals, followed by showcases at De Oosterpoort open only to Delegate Pass holders. The acts, recently signed by agencies, play a second, public slot later in the week. "In 2027 we kickstart ESNS with exclusive delegate only showcases at De Oosterpoort," managing director Anna van Nunen said in the first-wave announcement.
One route, two audiences
Put the two announcements together and the direction is clear. The showcases are no longer only parallel markets that happen to share delegates. They are being connected on purpose, and the professional is being moved ahead of the ticket buyer in the queue.
The route is already visible in the listings. The Swiss band Lone Assembly appears in the ESNS first wave and, this week, among the professional showcases at MaMA in Paris. BIME Live lists Dutch Music Export and Swiss Music Export among its supporters, next to Spanish and Latin American agencies.
Export offices and public agencies stand behind much of this, which is why Ireland's turn in Groningen is a story about public investment as well as bands: First Music Contact's chief executive, Angela Dorgan, credits funding from Culture Ireland and the Arts Council in the ESNS announcement. The risk is the one every trade fair runs: the more efficient the room becomes for buyers, the less it resembles the club night it is meant to predict.
