On 13 October the front page of coachella.com carries two messages that used to arrive in the opposite order. One reads "2027 Advance Sale Passes No Longer Available". The other is an absence: there is no 2027 line-up, and the banner at the top of the page still shows the dates of the edition that ended in April. The festival has sold its first allocation for a bill nobody has seen.

What is confirmed

Coachella announced its 2027 dates in April, within days of the 2026 edition closing. As NME reported, the festival returns to the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, on 9 to 11 April and 16 to 18 April 2027.

The advance sale opened on Friday 1 May at 11am Pacific time. Consequence published the price ladder, with service fees included: general admission from $599 for the first weekend and $549 for the second, rising to $649 and $599 and then to $699 and $649; VIP from $1,299 and $1,249, rising to $1,399 and $1,349. Every tier is $50 cheaper on the second weekend. The festival's passes page is blunt about what the tiers mean: "No difference in “tiers” other than price. Buy early to save."

A payment plan underpins the early date. The site's wording is: "Pay just $49 down at checkout, then split the rest into equal payments through January 2027."

As of 13 October, that passes page marks general admission "No Longer Available" and the four-pack "Sold Out". General admission with a shuttle pass and VIP both point to waitlists for each weekend. What can still be bought outright is everything around the ticket: car camping at $40 a night before tax, a shuttle pass at $150, preferred parking at $299, hotel packages, and, at $20, a collectible print described as the "2027 Lineup Poster".

That last item is the neatest summary of the situation. The festival is taking orders for a poster of a line-up it has not published.

What is not confirmed

No act has been announced by Goldenvoice, the promoter.

There is a report. On 1 September, Consequence and Stereogum both relayed a column in the trade publication HITS Daily Double saying that Tame Impala and Dua Lipa are expected to headline, that Fred again.. is lined up for a separate slot, and that several other names were being pursued for the remaining headline position. Both outlets presented it as a report, not an announcement, and Consequence added a plain caveat: "The release date for the lineup is unknown." It remains a rumour until the festival says otherwise.

The sequence has flipped twice in two years

The timing is the story, because it has moved so far so quickly.

For years the pattern was a January poster and a slow sell. Stereogum notes that Coachella line-ups used to be released in January. Pollstar records that the first weekend of the 2025 festival did not sell out until late February of that year, and that the year before it was mid-February before all tickets were gone.

For 2026 the festival pulled the announcement forward by months. The line-up, headed by Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber and Karol G, was published in mid-September 2025; passes went on sale on 18 September and both weekends were declared sold out on 22 September. In Pollstar's words, "it took just five days after the Sept. 18 on sale."

For 2027 the order is reversed again. Advance passes went on sale eleven months before the gates open and have gone, and the date on which last year's poster appeared passed a month ago without one.

Put the three cycles next to each other and a pattern emerges. In the first, the line-up was the sales tool and it worked slowly. In the second, the line-up was the sales tool and it worked in five days. In the third, the festival has moved its advance allocation without using the tool at all. NME, writing in April, said further ticket tiers would follow in the coming months, so the poster will still have passes to sell. But it is no longer what opens the sale. It is what closes it.

For the rest of the circuit, that is the lesson worth noting. A festival with this much brand can turn its line-up from a promise made before purchase into a confirmation delivered after it, and can use a $49 deposit and an instalment schedule ending in January to hold buyers in place while it finishes booking. The risk is transferred to the fan, who commits at $549 or more to an unknown bill. The benefit is the promoter's: cash and certainty in May for an event the following April.

What to watch

  • The line-up. No date has been given. The 2026 poster arrived in mid-September 2025.
  • Further releases. The festival's site offers separate AXS waitlists for each weekend and an official resale channel. Watch whether a new tier appears when the poster does.
  • January 2027. The month in which, by the site's wording, payment plan instalments end.
  • 9 to 11 April 2027. Weekend one at the Empire Polo Club.
  • 16 to 18 April 2027. Weekend two.
  • The HITS report. Whether Tame Impala and Dua Lipa are on the bill when it is published is a straightforward test of the trade press's sourcing.
